Abstract: It’s necessary to compare and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of infrared camera surveys with different sampling strategies to further understand the performance of biodiversity monitoring programs. From August 2012 to April 2015, 35 infrared cameras and 32 infrared cameras were set according to a hectare grid sampling strategy, and a square kilometer grid sampling strategy, respectively, at Nonggang National Nature Reserve to monitor mammals and forest birds continuously. It’s found that: (1) Within the same survey duration, accumulation of mammal species information in the kilometer grid sampling strategy was faster than those in the hectare grid sampling strategy; (2) There was no significant difference in the number of species detected by the two sampling strategies, but species composition was different; (3) Sampling rate and utilization rate for large and medium-sized mammals were higher in the kilometer grid sampling strategy, whereas sampling rate of small mammals was higher in the hectare grid sampling strategy. These results suggested that different sampling strategies may be required for different taxonomic groups and research questions.

Key words: camera traps, diversity of mammal and bird, sampling strategy, karst stony mountain habitat
