Study of Cascading Failure in the Grid under the Capacity Load Model with Neighbors Degree Information

Abstract: With the degree information of a node and its neighbor nodes, a new node capacity load model is proposed, which is applied to the study of cascading failures in the western power grid in the United States and other grids. In the simulations, the power grid are designed to be attacked by the highest load node (HL attack) and the lowest load node (LL attack) respectively. The results show that the power grid with the improved load model has better robustness and resistance to destruction compared with the traditional capacity load model based on the node degree. Through the study of the ratio of the sum of the neighboring degree values of the attacked node to its own degree value, it is well explained that the new model can reduce the scale of cascading failures in the network.
