Abstract: 35 infrared cameras were set in 15 hm2 Forest Dynamics Plot of Nonggang National Nature Reserve from August 2012 to October 2013 in order to monitor diversity of mammals and birds. Based on the pictures of Muntiacus muntjak captured by infrared cameras, the activity pattern of Muntiacus muntjak was analyzed using three activity indices, namely daily-discrepancy index α, diurnal-nocturnal index β, seasonal-activity index γ. The results showed that diurnal activity pattern showed significant difference, with two peak at 6:00-10:00 and 16:00-20:00. Although there was marked variation in monthly β values, the mean β value was 0.58 (>13/24), indicating that Muntiacus muntjak is a twilight diurnal animal. There was marked variation in monthly α values. Compared with dry season, the α values were higher in the rainy season. No significant variations were found in the γ values between seasons and years. But the time of activity peak differed between seasons and years. These variations may be related to seasonal variation in temperature and food availability of limestone habitats.

Key words: Muntiacus muntjak, infrared cameras, activity pattern, limestone habitat
