Comparison of Growth Characteristics of Different Geographic Populations of Invasive Parthenium hysterophorus under Common Garden Conditions

Abstract: Parthenium hysterophorus L.is a noxious invasiveplant species.Theyare mainly distributed in south and southwest areas in China.The newly discovered populations in Shandong Province have great genetic differentiation from southern populations.Seeds of Shandong and three southern populations (Xiamen,Guilin and Zhanjiang) were collected.The growth characteristics of different geographic populations of invasive Parthenium hysterophorus under common garden conditions were compared.The results suggested that there were significant differencesin morphology,including plant height,stem diameter,internode length and six leaf area.Capitulum diameter of Shandong was significantly smaller than that of the southern populations.These phenotypic data further indicated that there were significant genetic difference between the Shandong population and southern populations,which provided a basis for the development of rational management measures.
