Synthesis and Properties of Pickering Emulsions Stabilized by Modified Nano-silica with Multiple Quaternary Ammoniums

Abstract: The nano-silica particles were modified with multiple quaternary ammoniums (MQAS).The Pickering emulsions were prepared using the modified nano-silica particles as emulsifier and the effects of emulsifier concentration, temperature, pH value, and the addition of salts on the stability of Pickering emulsions were studied. The results showed that the emulsification properties become much better than those using the emulsifier of MQAS or nano-silica alone. The ratio of exudative water decreases with the increase of concentration of MQAS. Upon decreasing the pH value, the ratio of exudative water and the droplet diameter of emulsions increase, which indicates that a low pH value influences the electrostatic interactions between multiple quaternary ammoniums and nano-silica particles and thus weakens the stability of emulsions. The ratio of exudative water and the diameter of emulsion droplets also increase with an increasing concentration of NaCl, which suggests that the stability of emulsions is weakened due to the shielding effect of NaCl on the head charges of multiple quaternary ammoniums.
